Will my role evolve if the healthcare system changes?

It is not a matter of if, but when and how much. As community pharmacists begin to practise beyond the pharmacy walls, our scope of practice will continue to expand. But no matter how much our role changes, our core expertise as medication therapy experts will remain the same. This is what has allowed our profession to survive and thrive.

At River Terrace Medical Pharmacy, our services are divided conceptually into three areas: dispensing, clinical, and offsite. We have a strong dispensary team and a lean workflow process. From day one we’ve offered an auto-refill program paired with a medication sync program so all regular medications are due the same day and at the same time. This keeps our workflow proactive instead of reactive.

We offer all the clinical services in the Ontario scope of practice: vaccinations for influenza, but also hepatitis, herpes zoster, and even dihydroergotamine for migraine treatment. Our most advanced clinical service is our in-pharmacy warfarin-INR management program. We have successfully implemented a program to provide point-of-care testing (POCT) for INR with warfarin dose adjustments. This has been a tremendous draw for new clients, while lowering the risk for thromboembolic events.

Our team offers clinical consulting services in the community, providing medication consults at various clinics in town, presentations and workshops at community venues (e.g., cholesterol POCT and respiratory programming). And I hope eventually to offer POCT for screening/diagnostics/therapeutic purposes for all chronic conditions and select acute conditions.
