Appropriate drug utilization and the pharmacist’s role

In Canada the use of lower-cost generic medicines saved governments, employers and consumers more than $7 billion in 2010. For every one percent increase in generic drug utilization in Canada, Canadians save an additional $236 million. Although there are many factors at play in drug prescribing, the three most important should be the treatment's comparative safety, efficacy and cost. A biologic tsunami is coming. The sustainability of the healthcare system depends upon all stakeholders supporting treatment protocols that are both clinically and cost effective. A multidisciplinary panel will present their perspectives on appropriate drug utilization and pharmacists will have an opportunity to explore where they fit into the solution.
