Jeannette Wang energizes pharmacy and healthcare enhancement

Jeannette Wang started her career as a staff pharmacist for Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM). Although her career path has taken her to other major chains, she has returned to SDM to utilize her insight and direction in a senior management position.

How did you start your career?

When I graduated from pharmacy, I worked as a full-time pharmacist with SDM for a number of years, eventually becoming a pharmacy manager and then an associate. I was not overly ambitious, preferring to take my time and learn, while earning my “stripes” as this allowed me to transition easily to the next part of my career.

Tell me about your transition to independent pharmacy.

I moved from SDM to Drug Trading (DT). They were looking to set up a small team to develop programs for their banner pharmacies. It was a great opportunity for me as I was able to work on both the practice and business side of pharmacy.

When DT was purchased by the Katz Group, I was able to expand my portfolio of responsibilities to include their corporate pharmacies as well as the independents. In 2006, I joined Remedy’sRx as the Chief Pharmacy Officer. It was a great experience as the company was a start-up at the time and we were able to build a banner from the ground up to over 200 [stores] in a few years’ time.

What are you doing now?

I am the SVP Professional Affairs and Services for SDM. I am a pharmacy advocate, and I firmly believe in the value pharmacist services can provide to help reduce the strain on the healthcare system in Canada. Shoppers Drug Mart is truly making a difference to how pharmacy services are delivered to Canadians coast to coast.

What is your Women in Leadership committee?

At SDM, we created a committee to identify women who are potential leaders. We mentor them and help move them forward, whether it’s within the central or regional offices, or helping female pharmacists in becoming associates. The majority of our customers are women, so it is important that our business reflect our customers to help understand and provide them with the services and products they need.

What do you think about pharmacy’s future?

The speed of change is accelerating, with less time to adapt. Both the business and profession have to reengineer and retool constantly to survive and prosper in the new environment. We are not unique in the sense that other businesses and professions face the same challenge.
