For personal and professional career satisfaction, I believe it is crucial to transform one’s practice to a higher standard of patient care in order to run a more successful operation.

Although this is always a work in progress, the biggest key to success is having the right team around you. Will it ever be perfect? Probably not. However, it is important not to be satisfied with the status quo. In a busy practice you need strong team members around you who will help deliver on your vision of the business. I feel fortunate to have such a team throughout the entire store who truly lives and breathes this concept every day and with every customer and patient. This in turn allows me to focus on the pharmacy business. At our company, we have also embraced a set of CORE (Care, Ownership, Respect, Excellence) values that guide us in our ongoing decision-making.

In addition, our pharmacy team’s mission is to enhance our specialty offerings. All of my pharmacists have their injection certification and either have or are working towards their Additional Prescribing Authorization. One of my pharmacists is also a successful Certified Diabetes Educator and I have just started providing weight loss coaching. People are looking for more from their pharmacies than dispensing and counselling on medications. In addition, with regards to maintaining the image of your business, it’s important to keep the place clean, organized and properly merchandised.

When I became a Shoppers Drug Mart associate-owner in 2010, I eagerly accepted the challenges and rewards offered by business ownership and entrepreneurship. This decision has set me on an exciting path of new opportunities and experiences. It is never easy to transform one’s pharmacy practice and business. It takes a lot of hard work, planning and dedication. It’s a journey that intrigues me as our profession continually evolves.
